Moving Abroad - Moving to Turkey

There are issues to moving abroad other than just buying the house and moving in. As much as we want you to be able to buy your dream home from us, we also want to make sure that the process goes as smoothly as possible. Further information on moving to Turkey can be obtained from a number of sources on the internet, although we don't think you'll find any more reliable than the British Embassy

The following information was taken from the British Embassy web site and we do suggest you read the full document of Requirements for British Nationals Wishing to Settle, Work, or Buy Property in Turkey.

As you can see, it's a reasonably simple process, as long as you take it one piece at a time, and of course, we're here to help you every step of the way.

RESIDENCE IN TURKEY

(a) Residency Permits are obtained AFTER arrival in Turkey. Formal application must be made to the police authorities of the province in which you reside, or to the Aliens department of the Police in Ankara, if no fixed abode in Turkey is intended. HOWEVER, well BEFORE your departure from the UK, you should contact the Turkish Embassy in London for information on requirements for residency and for information about importation of your household goods or car.

(b) A RESIDENCE PERMIT IS AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY BEFORE YOU CAN CLEAR ANY PERSONAL GOODS/CAR FROM TURKISH CUSTOMS. THEREFORE AN APPLICATION FOR A RESIDENCE PERMIT MUST BE MADE in Turkey within one month from the date of your arrival to Turkey.

(c) On first application, residence permits may be issued for a two-year period, thereafter for a maximum of five years at any one time.

(d) Recent changes in method of calculating of fees for a Turkish resident permit has resulted in the following changes: Up to one month 6.00 TYL per day (this will not be less than (10.90 YTL and not more than 54.90 YTL for the first month) 36.50 YTL for each subsequent month.

PURCHASE OF PROPERTY IN TURKEY
UPDATED FLASH MESSAGE - 24.01.2006

We can now confirm that the law relating to the purchase of property by foreigners in Turkey was ratified by Turkish Parliament on 7 January 2006 and is now in force.

In real terms foreigners can only own up to a maximum of 2.5 hectares (25,000 m2) of land and property. Upon application the Council of Ministers may use its discretion to increase this threshold to a maximum of 30 hectares (300,000m2) providing this figure does not exceed a total of 0.5% of the land area of the province in question.

Foreign nationals and foreign commercial companies are not allowed to buy property in the strategic military and security zones of Turkey.

Please note that to purchase real estate/land in Turkey, conditions of reciprocity, complying with legal restrictions apply. In implementation of the reciprocity principles, it is essential that real estate acquisition rights given by a foreign country to its own citizens and to commercial companies established in foreign countries, according to the laws of these countries are also given to the citizens and commercial companies of the Republic of Turkey. As detailed in the Turkish Embassy website, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Turkey have full reciprocity regarding real estate acquisition.
